Dr.Bitew Abebe

Dr. Bitew Abebe Mengesha is an accomplished Urogynecologist and Obstetrician-Gynecologist with over two decades of experience in reproductive health and fistula surgery. He is currently the Medical Director at Bahirdar Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia, where he leads efforts to treat and manage obstetric fistula, improving the lives of women across Ethiopia.

A certified FIGO expert fistula surgeon, Dr. Bitew holds an MD from Addis Ababa University and specialized further in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He later pursued a subspecialty in Urogynecology at Mekelle University. His career has been distinguished by leadership roles in various hospitals, including serving as Medical Director of Dangila Health Centre and Assistant Medical Director at Felegehiowt Referral Hospital. He has also been a dedicated trainer, educator, and consultant, contributing to medical education and surgical training, particularly in the field of long-acting and permanent contraception.

Dr. Bitew has participated in numerous international initiatives, including the campaign to end obstetric fistula in Southern Sudan, and he was part of the obstetric fistula repair camp in Malawi organized by Physicians Across Continents (PAC), where he performed several complex operations. He is one of the few doctors worldwide capable of handling such intricate fistula surgeries. 

He has also presented at global conferences, such as the G7/20 Parliamentarians Conference. Fluent in English and Amharic, Dr. Bitew is a dedicated and inspiring figure in global health, especially in the areas of maternal care and fistula treatment. Married and a father of four, he balances his professional life with personal commitments in Bahirdar, Ethiopia.
