Professor Yakubu Ahmed
Professor Yakubu Ahmed is a distinguished healthcare professional with an illustrious career that spans over 30 years in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. His expertise in Urogynaecology, Female Pelvic Medicine, and Reconstructive Surgery has made him a pivotal figure in addressing maternal health challenges in Nigeria and across Africa.
Currently a Professor and Consultant at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Professor Ahmed has dedicated his life to clinical practice, education, and health administration. His work as a consultant extends beyond the classroom and hospital wards, notably through his involvement in Physicians Across Continents (PAC), where he has participated in multiple global surgical missions aimed at eradicating obstetric fistula in Africa. These missions took him to countries like Somalia, Ethiopia, and Malawi, where he performed complex fistula surgeries, including some of the most difficult cases. His surgical interventions have restored dignity and quality of life to numerous women who suffered from this debilitating condition.
Professor Ahmed also serves as a consultant at the Maryam Abacha Fistula Centre, where he continues to provide specialized care and perform surgeries for women with fistulas.
His deep commitment to improving women’s health is reflected in his hands-on involvement in some of the most challenging obstetric cases across the continent. In his role as Chief Medical Director at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital from 2010 to 2018, Professor Ahmed oversaw significant improvements in hospital services, staff development, and healthcare delivery. Under his leadership, the hospital established partnerships with international institutions for advanced medical services such as open-heart surgery, kidney transplants, and in-vitro fertilization. He was instrumental in implementing training programs that elevated the hospital’s capacity to handle specialized surgeries and high-level medical care, ensuring the institution remained at the forefront of healthcare in Nigeria.
